Turkey Tail Botanical Information
Turkey Tail mushrooms, scientifically known as Trametes versicolor, are found worldwide, commonly growing on decaying logs and stumps in forests. These mushrooms are easily recognizable by their colorful, fan-shaped layers resembling a turkey's tail. They have been used for centuries in traditional medicine, particularly in China and Japan, where they are revered for their natural properties.
Turkey tail mushrooms offer an impressive array of primary and secondary compounds. These secondary compounds include lesser-known components such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Researchers have identified 38 different phenolic compounds within Turkey tail, including quercetin and baicalein. Both quercetin and baicalein are well-known phenolic compounds found in other natural plants and herbs, backed by significant research and value.
Turkey tail mushrooms are particularly notable for their protein-bound polysaccharides, also known as polysaccharopeptides (PSPs). These polysaccharides occur naturally in Turkey tail mushrooms, and there are two commercially isolated types: PSP and PSK.
PSP and PSK are the two main commercial products derived from these polysaccharides. PSK, also known as polysaccharide-K, polysaccharide-Kureha, or krestin, has a molar mass of approximately 100 kDa. Studies have shown that both PSP and PSK can stimulate the immune system in various preclinical and clinical settings.
PSK A well-known story suggests that PSK was first discovered by a chemical engineer at Kureha Chemical Industry Co. The engineer noticed a neighbor improving his wellness by drinking tea made from Turkey tail mushrooms. Intrigued, he persuaded his employer to investigate the mushroom's beneficial properties.
This led to the isolation of PSK from the CM-101 strain of Turkey tail in 1971, which was then commercialized by Kureha Chemicals. By 1977, the Japanese Ministry of Health approved PSK for clinical use. Since then, PSK has been extensively studied for its role in supporting immune system function.
PSP In the 1980s, Chinese researchers began testing various strains of Turkey tail mushrooms and ultimately selected the COV-1 strain as their base. Professor Qing-yao Yang successfully extracted PSP from this strain, leading to its approval for clinical use by the Chinese government in 1987.
To date, more than 45 independent studies on PSP, both preclinical and clinical, have been conducted. Additionally, the China State Food and Drug Administration has approved 13 different products based on Turkey tail mushrooms.
Both PSK and PSP are classified as biological response modifiers (BRMs). These substances act as non-specific immunosupportive agents, helping to restore balance to the immune system without targeting a specific condition.
